On Monday 5th December 2016, the Committee on Culture and Education will vote on the draft report by Mr Takkula MEP on an integrated approach to Sport Policy: good governance, accessibility and integrity.
Whilst supporting the report as such, there are concerns with paragraph 35 which states the following:
35.Considers that traditional sports are part of the European cultural heritage;
As the draft report gives no definition on what is considered as traditional sports paragraph 35 can provide a justification for cruel practices like bull fighting, dog racings, fox hunting, canned hunting of game birds and falconry which are unacceptable on animal welfare grounds.
The Animal Welfare Intergroup therefore supports amendment 369 by Rosa D’Amato MEP and Isabella Adinolfi MEP which states the following:
- Considers that traditional sports are part of the European cultural heritage; deplores, at the same time, all those traditional sports or events that involve practices that are extremely violent towards animals;
The CULT-Committee should not support amendments 366, 367, 368 which all contribute to strengthen the original wording of the paragraph and therefore indirectly enhance the spreading of cruel sports involving animals.
