The future of the whales will be on the international agenda during the upcoming conference of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) from 25th June – 6th July in Panama. In the past, the EU position in favour of conservation was not always entirely supported by Denmark through its obligation to represent the interests of the Non-EU territories Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

Five conservation NGOs (Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), Humane Society International (HSI), Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS) Ocean Care, Pro Wildlife) have recently published the report “Breaking Ranks”, which documents their opinion on the position of Denmark at the IWC over the past two decades.

On Wednesday 6th June (18.00-20.00), MEPs Margrete Auken (Greens/EFA) and Jo Leinen (S&D) will host a panel discussion at the European Parliament to debate the issue of Denmark’s whaling policy. Poster
