In the space of just a few months, hundreds of dolphins have been found washed up dead on the shores of the Black Sea. They are caught up in nets and fishing gears, are the victims of illegal fishing activities, and also suffer from polluted waters.

Written declaration 23/2012  by Elena Băsescu (EPP, RO), Chris Davies (ALDE,UK), Andrey Kovatchev (EPP, BG) Isabella Lövin (Greens/EFA, SE) and Kristian Vigenin (S&D, BG)  calls on the Commission, the Council and the Member States to take supplementary measures in order to ensure that dolphins in the Black Sea are better protected. This should also include the obligatory use of acoustic deterrent devices.

The declaration appeals to the Black Sea littoral states to cooperate in this area and seeks in particular the support of Russia,Turkey and the Ukraine. The European Commission should take specific steps to secure an agreement under the Black  Sea Synergy initiative.

The Animal Welfare Intergroup calls on all MEPs to support this written declaration which can be a first step to ensure a better protection of dolphins in the Black Sea.

WD 23/2012 can be signed until 8th November 2012 but we encourage you to give your support signature as soon as possible.
