The “Conference on the protection of animals in slaughterhouses: Getting ready for 2013” held last Tuesday revealed appalling figures regarding the implementation of the new Slaughter Regulation 1099/2009.

The event gathered more than 300 participants in Brussels and was organized by the European Commission, the Cyprus Presidency of the EU Council, the European Livestock and Meat Trading Union (UECBV) and the EU Association of Poultry Processors and Poultry Trade (AVEC).

In advance to this event, European Commission sent detailed questionnaires to the respective competent authorities.

A total of 20 questionnaires were received by the Commission. The data show that only four countries will be ready on 1st January: Denmark, Sweden, Germany and the UK.  Most of the Member States are very far from being ready, and it is not clear what effort is being made by the Commission to speed up the process.
