On behalf of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, Czesław Adam Siekierski (EPP, PL) has presented an oral question on a new EU Animal Welfare Strategy for this term which will be debated in plenary on Monday 23 November in Strasbourg.

Here is the text of the question:

Subject:    A new animal welfare strategy for 2016-2020

The Commission communication on the European Union Strategy for the Protection and Welfare of Animals 2012-2015 (COM(2012)0006) has been much welcomed by the European Parliament, as it has set a clear roadmap for actions in the EU animal welfare policy field during the last five years. Parliament was particularly pleased that the strategy introduced many aspects of Parliament’s resolution of 5 May 2010.

Parliament appreciates the progress made so far and encourages the Commission to make sure that the action points still outstanding are delivered on time.

  1. Will the Commission draw up a new strategy for the protection and welfare of animals for the 2016-2020 period so as to ensure the continuity and clarity of operations which are essential to achieving further positive developments in EU animal welfare policy?

  1. Will the Commission, as a crucial part of a new animal welfare strategy, prepare a proposal for a simplified EU legislative framework for animal welfare, as called for by Parliament in its resolution of 4 July 2012 on the European Union Strategy for the Protection and Welfare of Animals 2012-2015?

The Animal Welfare Intergroup which was widely involved in this initiative very much hopes that the question will contribute to incite the European Commission to prepare a new EU Animal Welfare Strategy so as to ensure much needed further developments of EU animal welfare policy during this term.
