Cowspiracy On Wednesday 2 December, MEPs Eleonora Evi (EFD, IT), Stefan Eck (GUE/NGL, DE) and Molly Scott Cato MEP (Greens/EFA, UK) have hosted the screening of ‘Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret’ a 90-minute documentary film produced and directed by Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn.

Kip Andersen, co-director of the film, Dr Richard Oppelander, author of the book ‘Comfortably Unaware’, Sailesh Krishna Rao of Climate Healers as well as representatives of PETA Germany, the European Vegetarian Union and Sea Shepherd were on the expert panel to support the discussion on the issues highlighted in the documentary.

Cowspiracy shows that livestock farming and large scale fisheries are among the most destructive industries in the world today and are the principle cause for habitat loss and species extinction. Livestock and their by-products account for 51% of all worldwide greenhouse gas emissions and are therefore key factors for global warming.

The film investigates also the policies of environmental organizations like Greenpeace, the Sierra Club, the Surfrider Foundation, and the Rainforest Action Network, showing their reticence to admit that livestock farming has such detrimental effects on the environment. It is a worrying report about the power of the meat industry to silence major environmental organizations.

The screening was followed by an exchange of views with the panelists. As follow up action to the event Eleonora Evi and Stefan Eck have prepared a written question to the Commission on the “urgent need to reduce livestock’s impact on climate change.”
