This Thursday, July 7, at 09:30am, the Intergroup for Animal Welfare will meet in advance of the 19th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES (CITES COP19) to discuss various priority points related to animal welfare, including trophy hunting.

The Intergroup is delighted to be hearing from Jorge Rodríguez Romero, Deputy Head of Unit, DG ENV, European Commission. He will share the EU priorities for the CITES COP19. His presentation will be followed by an intervention by MEP Ville Niinisto (Greens/EFA, FI) who is the co-rapporteur on behalf of the Greens/EFA Group on the ENVI Draft Motion for a Resolution on the EU Strategic Objectives for CITES COP19.

The meeting will then hone in on the important topic of trophy hunting. Mr Rodríguez Romero will take a look at the Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and try to reconcile it with the current EU Trophy Hunting practices. Dr Joanna Swabe, Senior Director of Public Affairs in the Humane Society International/Europe will give an insight on how to strengthen the EU regime for the import of hunting trophies.
