Transitioning to cage-free farming: Online event coming soon!

9 Oct 2020
On 13 October 2020, the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) will present its brand-new report on the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of ending the use of cages in EU farming.

The webinar will take place from 10:30 until 12:00 CET. It is hosted by Members of the European Parliament in the Cage-Free Working Group of the Intergroup on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals and is organised by Compassion in World Farming.

Over the last few years, the animal welfare and environmental movements across Europe teamed up for a monumental campaign to end the use of cages in farming. Over 170 organisations joined forces with MEPs from across the political spectrum in supporting the European Citizens’ Initiative to ‘End the Cage Age’. The Initiative was recently pronounced as only the sixth European Citizens’ Initiative to succeed since the first Initiative was launched over eight years ago. It received 1.4 million signatures validated by EU Member States. It is the very first successful Initiative for farmed animals. Eventually, the European Commission will need to issue a decision in response to the citizens’ demand for an end to the use of cages for farmed animals.

The discussion will take place in the context of the recent EU ‘Farm to Fork’ Strategy, which signals the need to review and improve legislation on farm animal welfare alongside many other steps to improve the sustainability of both production and consumption of animal products. During the webinar, we will hear about policies that will ensure a smooth transition to sustainable food systems, for the benefit of farmed animals, rural communities and our planet.
