What needs to change for broiler chickens in the EU? Successful event

20 Nov 2020
On 19 November 2020, the Intergroup on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals organised the online conference 'From minimum legal standards to "good lives": what needs to change for broiler chickens in the EU?'

The webinar, hosted by MEP Anja Hazekamp (GUE/NGL), gathered 134 stakeholders from the academia, industry, Member States, the European Parliament, the European Commission and several NGO's.

The event was also the opportunity to launch the Eurogroup for Animals' new report entitled The welfare of broiler chickens in the EU: from science to action, which presented the first comprehensive scientific overview on the welfare of broiler chickens.

During the two hours online event, five co-authors of the report: Dr. Ingrid de Jong, Dr. Marc Bracke, Dr. Marien Gerritzen, Professor Christine Nicol and Professor Niamh O'Connell presented their views on what needs to change for broiler chickens in the European Union, they provided recommendations and answered questions from the audience.

The vivid debate, moderated by Reineke Hameleers CEO of Eurogroup for Animals, was accompanied by a live visit to the Windstreek Farm, where Robert Nijkamp awaited attendees to give them a virtual tour through his broiler farm in the Netherlands.
